Do you need a merchant account?
Are you considering signing up for a merchant
account for your business? If so you might want to consider a few things
first. Read along so that you can make an informed decision.
Commitments
First you should consider the fact that most
merchant account providers will require you to sign some sort of
commitment. They might require you to commit to there service for as
little as one year or for two years or even more. If you cancel before the
end of this period you will pay a substantial penalty.
Minimums
You should also consider that many companies
will require you to have a minimum dollar amount of transactions. If you
do not meet this requirement you may be charged penalties.
Alternatives
Before signing a contract consider the
alternatives. There are other ways to take credit card payments without a
merchant account. You could for example sign up for a service like Paypal.
The fees are similar but you will have no monthly fees, minimums or
contracts.
Other Payments
Will your customers even use a credit card?
Consider how many people will actually use credit cards for payment. Do
not make the mistake of accepting credit cards just so you can say you
take them. People who might otherwise pay with checks or cash will pay
with credit cards and you will incur extra fees that you wouldn't
otherwise face.
